Man survives being struck by train in Alto

ALTO, Ga. — A man is hospitalized after being struck by a train Saturday afternoon in Alto.

The incident happened shortly before 3 p.m. May 2 near Grant Mill Road and Gainesville Highway. Authorities said the injured man is deaf. He was walking near the tracks when he was hit by a southbound Norfolk Southern Railway freight train.

Despite the impact, the man survived. First responders found him conscious and alert at the scene. He was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with head trauma and severe leg injuries.

Alcohol was found at the scene, but officials have not confirmed whether it played a role in the incident.

Units from Habersham County Emergency Services, Baldwin Fire, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, and Alto Police responded.

Officials have not released the man’s identity. The incident remains under investigation.
