CLEVELAND, Ga. – After serving city residents for 71 years at a South Main Street address, the City of Cleveland officially has a new home. The city held a ribbon-cutting and open house Friday, September 18, for the new Cleveland City Hall Complex on Cantrell Road.
Woodman Life Chapter 565 in Cleveland presented the city with a new flag and flagpole for the facility. Barbara Thomas, representing the local Woodman chapter, told the crowd, “We gathered today not just to dedicate a piece of metal and fabric, but to anchor a powerful symbol right here at this new city hall location for our community to see.”
During the ceremony, Cleveland Mayor Josh Turner shared with the crowd on hand how the city got to where it is now with this facility. Turner told the crowd that Mountain Craft Builders worked with the City of Cleveland to purchase the building and make the changes needed to transform the existing facility into a municipal complex that could meet the city’s needs for decades.
He said they bought an existing building rather than starting from the ground up.
“This is a big step forward for Cleveland; we are putting our city in a position to serve our residents for many years to come. Public facilities belong to the people that they serve, and this building will be a place where the business of our city is conducted for many years to come,” Turner said.
He added, “Today we celebrate and remember the past. We recognize the people and the work that brought us here, and we look forward to what comes next. After 71 years at 85 South Main Street, Cleveland has a new home.”
The complex has areas for city offices, city council meetings, and the police department.
The new facility is now ready to serve the community, and the Cleveland City Council will hold its first meeting in the building on Monday, September 21 at 6:30 PM.
