A victim in Harris County was scammed out of $7000 according to sheriff’s investigators and now they are warning residents to check on their people. The incident was shared with the public by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.
“No matter how much information we share, there will always be a percentage of our community that is unaware of the latest scams or simply gets caught at the wrong moment by a professional scammer,” sheriff’s investigators said urging residents to talk to their family, friends and neighbors “especially the elderly” about phone scams.
In this case the caller posed as an official bank representative from Wells Fargo. The scammer convinced the victim to withdraw $7000 from her bank account and deposit the money on a prepaid card using different Dollar Generals and Walgreens.
“Please take a few minutes today to check on your loved ones and discuss these scams. A simple conversation could save someone thousands of dollars and a great deal of heartache,” investigators said.
