DEMOREST, Ga. — Traffic is moving again on GA 105 (Cannon Bridge Road) in Demorest, after being blocked most of the day Wednesday due to a gas leak. A nearly mile-long stretch between Smith Loop Road and Old Cleveland Road was closed around 9 a.m. on Sept. 16. The road reopened around 10:15 p.m.
Habersham EMC reported the leak near 1687 Cannon Bridge Road after a gas line was struck beneath a power line, officials said. Traffic was disrupted, and hundreds of homes and businesses were left without electricity after officials cut power as a precaution.
The Torch Worship Center and Fairview Elementary School were among the facilities impacted, but the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office assured the public, “There is no danger to anyone at those facilities.”
Fairview Elementary School ran on generators for most of the day, and some buses were rerouted to get students home safely.
