CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — The Habersham County coroner has identified a man found dead on a roadway early Saturday morning as 30-year-old Buddy Lee Fairchild. A vehicle struck Fairchild while he was reportedly lying on Tom Born Road near U.S. 441/GA 15.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. Sept. 12, after the driver called 911. He told dispatchers he struck something in the road and then realized it was a person. The driver said he returned to check on Fairchild and found him unresponsive.

Fairchild was pronounced dead at the scene.

His last known address was in Mountain City, but Coroner Kasey McEntire said Fairchild had recently been staying in Habersham County.

Death investigation continues

McEntire said it is too early to determine whether Fairchild was alive when the vehicle struck him. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

The incident occurred hours after a woman was struck and injured by an SUV on Talmadge Drive in Hollywood while reportedly out walking her dogs.
