CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — The Habersham County Board of Education will consider a radio maintenance agreement with Habersham County and the transfer of surplus technology property to Rabun County Emergency Services when it meets Monday, Sept. 14.
The board’s regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Habersham County Schools administrative offices. The agenda also includes personnel recommendations, a financial report, student recognitions and a proclamation recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month.
Both of the intergovernmental items on Monday’s agenda were discussed during the board’s Sept. 10 work session.
Radio system agreement
The board will consider an agreement with Habersham County covering site leases, radio maintenance and administration of the countywide radio system used by the school system.
Assistant Superintendent David Leenman told the board Thursday that the agreement would cost the school system $177,804 annually, with the expense paid through ESPLOST funds.
The county adopted the radio system to allow the school system and other agencies to operate on the same system as Habersham County 911.
The agreement would run for one year and automatically renew if both parties remain satisfied with the terms and service.
Board Chair Joey Duncan asked whether the system administrator would be employed by the county. Leenman confirmed that the administrator would be a county employee.
The agreement is listed as one of four business items scheduled for board action Monday.
Surplus tower headed to Rabun County
The board also will consider donating surplus property from the district’s technology department to Rabun County Emergency Services.
Leenman said Thursday that the property includes an outdated communications tower located at Cornelia Elementary School.
The tower was removed from the school system’s capital assets in June 2025 after being fully depreciated, and the district no longer has a use for it.
Rabun County Emergency Services has agreed to arrange for its removal using a fully insured contractor already under contract with the county. Leenman said the arrangement will save Habersham County Schools the expense of removing the unused tower.
The tower would be removed during a school holiday or weekend when students are not on campus.
Mental health proclamation, student advocacy recognition
Monday’s agenda also includes a Governor’s Proclamation of Mental Health Awareness Month as a consent-agenda item.
The proclamation follows last week’s board presentation on the district’s mental health services, which detailed suicide prevention education, student support programs, counseling referrals, crisis response and other resources.
The board also will recognize its student advocacy specialists during Monday’s meeting.
Other recognitions include the Peach State Federal Credit Union Extra Mile Award, the Service Above Self Award and Georgia School Bus Safety Poster winners.
Other business
The board is scheduled to consider personnel recommendations and approve its financial report. Field trip requests and per diems for the board’s August meetings also appear on the consent agenda.
The meeting will begin with approval of the agenda and minutes from the Aug. 6 work session and Aug. 10 regular meeting, followed by announcements and recognitions and an opportunity for public comment.
