DEMOREST — Fire crews responded Wednesday evening to a trash fire that spread into nearby trees off Charlie Batson Road in Demorest, according to Habersham County Director of Emergency Services Chief Jeff Adams.
The fire was reported at approximately 6:04 p.m. on May 14. Engine 5 responded from Station 5 and arrived on scene at 6:09 p.m., where firefighters observed smoke coming from behind a residence.
Crews determined the fire originated in a trash pile containing a mattress and other furniture items. The flames spread into nearby trees, but the residence was not damaged, Adams said.
Residents were attempting to extinguish the fire with a water hose before firefighters arrived on scene. Captain 1 spoke with the resident while suppression operations began.
Firefighters deployed a 2 1/2-inch attack line to bring the fire under control. After extinguishing the main body of fire, crews used a thermal imaging camera to locate and extinguish remaining hot spots while overhauling debris and ashes.
The fire was declared under control at 6:18 p.m. All units returned to service at 6:39 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
