Unofficial results in Lee County, AL show Cam Hunt beating longtime incumbent Jay Jones in the race for sheriff. Hunt won a tight race with 9,301 votes. Jones had 8,994 votes.
Jay Jones served Lee County for nearly three decades as sheriff before this primary election. Hunt declared victory late Tuesday night with a message on social media.
“As a Marine veteran, former deputy, husband, father, and proud Lee County native, I ran to bring real accountability, integrity, and fresh leadership to the Sheriff’s Office and with your help, that’s exactly what we’re going to deliver. To everyone who voted, whether for our campaign or not: I will work every single day to earn your trust and serve every resident of Lee County fairly and without favoritism. Public service is a sacred responsibility, and I will never forget who I answer to, you, the people,” Hunt wrote in part.
