CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County officials are reviewing how the county would regulate data centers following questions and concerns from residents.
During Monday’s Board of Commissioners meeting, Chairman Travis Turner said the county’s Planning Commission will examine county codes, zoning and other procedures related to data centers within the next 30 days.
Turner said no data center applications are pending and no companies currently plan to locate one in White County.
“We do not have a data center planning to relocate, nor do we have any applications regarding a data center. However, we are planning ahead; if a data center would want to come to White County, it’s going to have to go where we as a community want it to go,” Turner said.
Any proposed data center would face strict guidelines and limitations, he added.
The local review comes as U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia has called for a moratorium on data center development. Warnock says protections addressing utility bills, pollution, and transparency should be in place before facilities are built, arguing that large corporations are overwhelming small communities with massive developments.
