Second suspect arrested in downtown Athens shooting that damaged businesses

ATHENS, Ga. — A second suspect has been arrested in connection with an early morning shooting that damaged several businesses in downtown Athens. 21-year-old Markavion Gresham of Athens was arrested in connection with the July 5 shooting, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

Police charged Gresham with two counts each of aggravated assault, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies, along with one count of criminal damage to property.

Around 3:05 a.m. on July 5, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of 246 East Clayton Street.

Investigators determined that multiple firearms of different calibers were fired during the incident, said ACCPD Public Information Assistant Geoff Gilland. Although no one was injured, several businesses along East Clayton Street were struck by gunfire.

Gresham is the second person charged in the case.

On July 7, with assistance from the University of Georgia Police Department, officers arrested 19-year-old Damian Swint of Athens. Swint faces charges of aggravated assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies, theft by receiving stolen property, carrying a weapon in a school safety zone and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

The investigation remains ongoing.
