MOUNT AIRY, Ga. — The Mount Airy Town Council is expected to consider two agreements with countywide implications when it meets Monday evening, including a proposed tax-sharing agreement with Habersham County and the final approval of a franchise agreement with Habersham Electric Membership Corporation.
Council members will meet at 7 p.m. July 13 at Town Hall.
One of the meeting’s most significant agenda items is consideration of an intergovernmental agreement with Habersham County for the proposed Floating Homestead Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST). The agreement is required before the county can place the measure on the Nov. 3 ballot for voters to consider.
If approved by voters, the one-cent sales tax would provide participating local governments with property tax relief for homeowners while distributing revenue among Habersham County and its municipalities under a state-established formula. Mount Airy would join several other Habersham municipalities that have recently approved the agreement.
The council is also scheduled to hold the second and final reading of an ordinance granting a franchise agreement to Habersham EMC. The agreement governs the electric cooperative’s use of the town’s rights of way to provide electric service and updates terms between the utility and the town.
Council members are also expected to consider setting a speed limit on Chase Road within the town limits. The agenda does not specify the proposed speed or the reason for the change.
Other business includes appointing Walker, Pierce & Tucker as the town’s auditor, approving minutes from the June regular and called meetings, receiving department reports and hearing public comments.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday at Mount Airy Town Hall and is open to the public.
