ATLANTA — Drivers across Northeast Georgia can expect increased law enforcement presence on area roadways this week as officers participate in Operation Southern Slow Down, a statewide traffic enforcement campaign aimed at reducing speeding and saving lives.

The annual initiative, coordinated in Georgia by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, runs through Saturday, July 18. Law enforcement agencies across the state are joining officers in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee to target speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors.

Motorists can expect to see additional patrols on interstates, state highways and local roads. Officers will focus on speeding violations while also enforcing seat belt laws, distracted driving and impaired driving offenses.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety says speeding remains one of the leading contributors to fatal crashes in Georgia.

During last year’s Operation Southern Slow Down campaign, Georgia law enforcement agencies made more than 13,000 speeding contacts. Across the five participating states, officers issued nearly 53,000 speeding citations and warnings, arrested more than 1,400 impaired drivers and issued more than 3,000 citations or warnings for distracted driving.

State officials encourage motorists to obey posted speed limits, buckle up, avoid distractions behind the wheel and never drive impaired.

“This campaign is about changing driving behavior and preventing crashes before they happen,” the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said in announcing the initiative.
