CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Jason Streetman is officially Clarkesville’s next city manager after the City Council unanimously approved his employment contract Monday night.

Streetman, who will assume the position Aug. 3, thanked council members for their confidence and said he and his wife have already begun feeling at home in Clarkesville.

“It’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you for the vote of confidence,” Streetman said following the unanimous vote.

Streetman said they attended Saturday’s Red, White & Tunes celebration in Clarkesville and came away impressed by the community and the effort that went into organizing the event.

“My wife and I came down for the event Saturday night,” he said. “It was actually kind of nice to enjoy one without being here, there and everywhere.”

Drawing on his experience in local government, Streetman said he understands the work required to put on a successful community event.

“I know what it takes to put those off — the police, the fire, all of the staff, the vendors,” he said. “It was a great night. The fireworks looked fantastic.”

Streetman said he is eager to begin his new role.

“I’m definitely looking forward to getting here every day,” he said. “I’m looking forward to coming on.”

The council selected Streetman as its sole finalist last month following a nationwide search to replace retiring City Manager Keith Dickerson. Streetman currently serves as city manager in Sky Valley.

Demorest IGA tabled

In other business, the council tabled a proposed intergovernmental agreement with the City of Demorest for court clerk services.

The agreement, which was approved unanimously by the Demorest City Council last week, would have allowed Clarkesville Municipal Court Clerk  to assume court clerk duties for both cities following the recent retirement of Demorest Municipal Court Clerk.

Before the vote, City Clerk Julie Poole asked council members to delay action.

“I kind of want to hold on and discuss a little further with you all before y’all go for it,” Poole said.

Council members agreed to table the item for future consideration.

Following the regular meeting, council members entered executive session to discuss property acquisition and personnel. No action was expected following the closed session.
