Broken sewer line spills wastewater into Mossy Creek

CLEVELAND, Ga. — A broken sewer line in Cleveland released less than 10,000 gallons of wastewater into Mossy Creek on Monday, prompting public health advisories along the affected waterway.

According to the City of Cleveland, utility crews responded to a sewer overflow at approximately 8:30 a.m. on July 13 at 381 Donald E. Thurmond Parkway. Officials said a broken pipe caused the overflow, allowing untreated wastewater to enter Mossy Creek.

The city reported the spill was stopped by 8:30 p.m. Monday after crews identified the damaged pipe, completed repairs, and began efforts to minimize environmental impacts.

In accordance with Georgia’s Rules and Regulations for Water Quality Control, the city issued a public notice about the spill.

Officials are posting advisory signs along the affected sections of Mossy Creek and urge the public to observe all warning signs and avoid contact with the impacted water until conditions are deemed safe.
