WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators believe they have identified the man and woman whose bodies were found on Mount Yonah, but authorities are awaiting dental record comparisons before releasing their names.
The two were not White County residents, according to an update from the White County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators determined the bodies had been on the mountain for several weeks before a hiker discovered them around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.
“Facts in this case, including evidence collected at the scene, suggest the couple went up the mountain with the intention of never coming back down,” the sheriff’s office said.
Autopsies were conducted Tuesday morning. The results, including the causes and manners of death, remain pending.
Sheriff’s office investigators, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Region 8 Crime Scene Unit responded to the mountain after the remains were discovered.
Authorities said the case remains active and ongoing. No further details have been released.
