There are plenty of outdoor events across the Chattahoochee Valley this weekend featuring food, fun and fireworks. Whether you and your family will be attending one of those in commemoration of Independence Day and America’s 250th birthday or entertaining in your own backyard, either way it is hotter than Hell’s Kitchen.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect through Saturday, with heat index values forecast to reach as high as 108 degrees. Even as darkness approaches to enjoy watching fireworks, it will still be in the mid to low 80’s and feel much hotter. Those weather conditions can result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headache, and muscle cramps. The skin often becomes cool, pale, and clammy, while the pulse may feel rapid but weak. Unlike heat stroke, mental state typically stays clear, though individuals may briefly feel faint.
Immediate First Aid
If you suspect heat exhaustion, take the following actions at once:
- Stop activity: Move to a cool, air-conditioned or heavily shaded area immediately.
- Cool down: Remove unnecessary clothing, apply cool, wet cloths, or take a cool shower.
- Hydrate: Sip cool water or electrolyte-rich sports drinks.
- Rest: Lie down and elevate your feet slightly.
When to Seek Emergency Help
Heat exhaustion can quickly escalate into life-threatening heat stroke. Call 911 immediately if the person experiences:
- A change in mental status (confusion, slurred speech, agitation, or irrational behavior).
- Loss of consciousness or seizures.
- A core body temperature reaching 104°F (40°C) or higher.
- Symptoms that do not improve or worsen after 30 minutes of rest and cooling.

“Before even dealing with the heat, drink plenty of water,” recommends Jack Rodgers, Director of EMS and Community Trauma for Piedmont Columbus Regional. “It will better prepare you to sweat off and cool off from hot weather exposure.”
If your pets are with you during the festivities, remember that they need extra water. After all, they wear a fur coat. Enjoy the 4th and America 250 events, but take precautions to be safe.
