DEMOREST, Ga. — The City of Demorest will mark Independence Day with its annual “Glorious 4th of July” celebration Saturday, a full day of events featuring a morning 5K, downtown parade, community activities and an evening fireworks display.
Demorest is the only city in Habersham County that hosts its Independence Day celebration on July 4 itself, a tradition that officials say has become a signature community event in Northeast Georgia.
Early start with 5K, rising heat
The day begins with the Firecracker 5K at 7 a.m., when temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70s. Conditions will quickly warm, with a forecast high near 94 degrees and heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees during the afternoon.
By the time fireworks begin around 9:45 p.m., temperatures are expected to settle into the mid- to lower 80s.
Organizers are encouraging participants to prepare for the heat, stay hydrated and take precautions during extended outdoor activities.
Parade through downtown Demorest

The parade is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., with lineup and registration starting at 9:30 a.m. at Piedmont Commons on the campus of Piedmont University.
Participants are directed to enter from Georgia Street near Yonah Memorial. The parade route will begin on College Avenue behind the university, continue to Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway, proceed onto Central Avenue through downtown Demorest and conclude at Florida Street.
City officials said motorists should expect delays along the route and plan accordingly.
Demorest Mayor Jerry Harkness told Now Georgia there is still time for residents to participate in the parade.
“So it’s not too late to sign up for the parade,” Harkness said. “Call in before the end of today or before lunchtime tomorrow to get your name on the list. We do have availability for the children’s parade, if you would like to get your kids in, and golf carts or bicycles, or anything like that, to make this a fun community event. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there. I know it’s going to be a warm day, but it’s going to be a great day to celebrate our community and our country.”
He said residents can contact City Hall at (706) 778-4202.
Fireworks at Demorest Spring Park

Fireworks will be launched from Johnny Mize Drive, with public viewing at Demorest Springs Park.
The Demorest Police Department will close portions of Johnny Mize Drive, Massachusetts Avenue and Demorest Lake Road near the firing site before the show begins. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area and follow posted detours and law enforcement instructions.
Parking available across city

Parking will be available at multiple locations, including most of Piedmont University campus lots open to the public. Additional parking will be available in downtown public lots, at Demorest City Hall and at Demorest Baptist Church.
Officials are encouraging attendees to arrive early due to expected heavy traffic throughout the day.

Tradition and community
Harkness said Demorest’s celebration has long been part of the city’s identity and is recognized for its history.
“I feel honored that we’ve participated in this for so many years,” he told Now Georgia. “It has been stated that we are the second oldest Fourth of July event that happens on the Fourth of July, besides Savannah, so that’s something big for the state of Georgia too.”
He added that the event’s meaning is rooted in community connection.
“I think just seeing our community come out, getting to see our friends and family, and celebrate alongside one another,” Harkness said.
