ATHENS, Ga. — A 66-year-old Athens man has died from injuries he suffered in a traffic crash last month, marking the sixth fatal traffic crash in Athens-Clarke County this year.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, David Engel died on July 1 after being seriously injured in a June 12 crash at the intersection of Lexington Road and East Meadow Drive.

Police said the crash happened at approximately 4:06 p.m. on June 12. Investigators determined Engel was riding a 2025 moped westbound on Lexington Road when a red 2014 Honda Accord traveling eastbound turned left onto East Meadow Drive.

The moped struck the front passenger side of the Honda, ejecting Engel from the vehicle.

Engel was transported by EMS to a local hospital with suspected serious injuries. Investigators learned Wednesday that he died as a result of those injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Sgt. Vincent Schill at 762-400-7092 or by email at [email protected].
