MARTIN, Ga. — Authorities are working to identify human remains discovered last week in a field in the Martin area of Franklin County.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the scene Wednesday, Aug. 26, after receiving a report that human remains had been found. Investigators and patrol deputies responded and secured the area. After an initial examination of the scene, sheriff’s investigators requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation because of the condition of the remains and the complexity of the case.

“There is no evidence of any threat to the general public and, at this point in the active investigation, no evidence of foul play,” said Franklin County Sheriff Scott Andrews.

The remains are now in the custody of the Franklin County Coroner and GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, which are working to identify the body.

Andrews said the investigation is ongoing.
