CLEVELAND — The Habersham County Board of Education recognized two school employees Monday night with Peach State Federal Credit Union awards, honoring contributions ranging from classroom leadership to behind-the-scenes support services.

Board member Doug Westmoreland presented the Peach State Federal Credit Union Service Above Self Award to Wilbanks Middle School media clerk Faviola Osorto, praising her dedication to students, staff and families that extends well beyond her job description.

Westmoreland said Osorto plays a key role in maintaining the school’s media center and supporting its technology infrastructure, often dedicating significant time to ensure computers are ready for students and teachers at the start of the school year.

“At the start of this school year, she spent extensive time preparing computers so the students and teachers could begin their year without disruption,” Westmoreland said.

He said Osorto has become a trusted resource across the school community, often assisting students, teachers, parents and even the school nurse when technical issues arise.

“What truly sets Ms. Osorto apart is her remarkable ability connecting with and serve others,” Westmoreland said. “Her positive attitude and genuine willingness to help create an atmosphere of warmth and support that touches everyone she encounters. No request is too small, no problem too complex.”

Westmoreland also highlighted Osorto’s work supporting Spanish-speaking families, saying she actively works to ensure language is not a barrier to involvement in students’ education.

He cited a recent example in which Osorto supported a sixth-grade English language learner lesson about astronaut José Hernández. Using a bilingual picture book, she read to students in both English and Spanish to help bring the story to life.

“She doesn’t simply complete tasks,” Westmoreland said. “She finds ways to make every interaction meaningful and every contribution impactful. Her work strengthens our community, supports our most vulnerable families and enriches the educational experience for all of our students.”

The board also recognized Habersham Central High School teacher Shane Hotalen with the Peach State Federal Credit Union Extra Mile Award.

Board Chairman Joey Duncan presented the award, praising Hotalen’s consistency, patience and support of students both inside and outside the classroom.

Duncan said Hotalen played a key role this school year in helping implement the Sources of Strength program at Habersham Central High School, serving as an adult advisor and supporting peer-led mental health initiatives.

“When discussing our current trusted adults campaign with our peer leaders, Mr. Hotalen’s name consistently rises to the top,” Duncan said. “Students naturally identify him as someone they trust, respect and feel comfortable turning to for support.”

Duncan added that Hotalen is widely viewed by students as a mentor who models patience, consistency, empathy and integrity.

“He truly embodies what it means to go the extra mile,” Duncan said.
