DEMOREST, Ga. — Habersham County is mourning the loss of a trailblazing public servant whose career helped shape local government for more than four decades.
Nell Partain Goss, Habersham County’s first certified female deputy sheriff, died Thursday, May 7, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. She was 85.
Goss served as a deputy sheriff in the historic courthouse on Monroe Street and spent more than 40 years working in various roles within Habersham County Government. According to her obituary, her public service career spanned from 1982 until 2026.
During her distinguished career, Goss made history as the county’s first female deputy sheriff at a time when few women served in law enforcement roles in Northeast Georgia. Friends and colleagues said her professionalism, compassion, and commitment to serving the public earned her respect throughout the community.
In addition to her government service, Goss worked for 22 years at the Beef Baron restaurant in Baldwin. There, she became a familiar face and friend to generations of customers and coworkers.
“Her warmth, strength, and caring spirit touched countless lives and will never be forgotten,” her family said.
Goss was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Goss, and is survived by her son and daughter, two grandchildren, and three great-granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, in Demorest. Burial will follow at VFW Memorial Park with law enforcement honors provided by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 11, and again from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
