BALDWIN, Ga. — Former Baldwin Assistant Police Chief Justin Ferguson is under active investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). A credible source tells Now Georgia that, upon Ferguson’s March resignation, evidence of alleged theft was discovered in connection with his employment with the Baldwin Police Department (BPD).
Baldwin Police Chief Chris Jones would not confirm details of the investigation, but said, “We turned over information to the GBI that we discovered after a former employee resigned.”
GBI Director of Public and Government Affairs Sara Lue confirmed that their agents were working on a case, but could not specify case details.
In March, Ferguson was allowed to resign under a cloud of mystery after he was placed on leave and the city council reviewed an ongoing investigation regarding his employment. Now Georgia reached out to City Attorney Bubba Samuels for clarification, but he did not reply to requests for information.
After leaving BPD, Ferguson took a law enforcement job with the Toccoa Police Department (TPD). As of the time of this article, TPD Chief Bruce Carlisle had not responded to a request for comment, and sources also said Ferguson abruptly resigned from that agency.
Now Georgia sent multiple requests to Ferguson for comment, but he had not responded as of this article’s publication.
This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.
