LULA, Ga. — A commercial chicken house in Banks County was destroyed by fire Tuesday night, killing approximately 22,000 chickens, according to fire officials.

Banks County Fire & Emergency Services responded to the structure fire at about 8:18 p.m. April 14 at 3280 Hwy. 51 South in Lula, Fire Chief Steve Nichols said.

When crews arrived, the chicken house was fully involved. The structure was declared a total loss. Firefighters also extinguished several spot brush fires to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the immediate area.

Nichols said the chicken house was occupied at the time of the fire, and all 22,000 chickens inside were lost.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, though electrical issues have not been ruled out.

The Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department assisted at the scene. The incident was cleared at approximately 11:04 p.m., said Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols

No injuries were reported.

This is the second major chicken house fire in Banks County this week.

On Sunday, April 12, a poultry farmer lost an estimated $500,000 investment when a chicken house on Bellamy Road burned.

There were no chickens inside the house at the time of the fire.
