Sunday was a stellar day for Russell Henley, ending with a playoff against Eric Cole who had led all three days in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Henley came from three shots behind, birdied the last three holes and then added his fourth birdie for the playoff win. It’s the first win of the season and sixth of his career for Henley and sixth of his career for the 37-year-old Columbus pro.

Prior to winning the Charles Schwab Challenge, Henley was ranked 12th in the World Ranking behind Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Cameron Young, and Matt Fitzpatrick. Today, he has moved up to #5 in the World Ranking.

Columbus has golfing history to be celebrated including the achievement of Larry Mize, for his 1987 Masters victory, where he sunk a miracle chip shot in a playoff to win his green jacket. George “G.G” Johnson, born and raised in Columbus, broke significant racial barriers in the sport, winning the 1971 Azalea Open and becoming one of the first African Americans to reach full PGA membership. Then, Hugh Royer III won the 1985 NCAA Division II Championship. He went on to secure four victories across the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour before transitioning to a successful golf coaching career.

After 11 tournaments this year. Henley has seven top 25 finishes. That is an accomplishment in the world of golf when you compete against top golfers each week. It’s likely Russell Henley will be added to the list of Columbus golf history.
