Fundraiser removed for school bus driver charged in fatal crash

A fundraiser established to provide legal aid for an Auburn school bus driver arrested after a fatal crash has been removed by GoFundMe. 75-year-old Theresa McCloud was indicted last week by a Lee County Grand Jury on charges of homicide by vehicle and criminally negligent homicide for the November 2025 crash that killed Jennifer Cooper, owner of Gigi’s Cupcakes.

The crowdfunding platform sent McCloud an email explaining the rationale behind the removal of her account which she shared on social media. “We’re writing to inform you that your GoFundMe account was removed because it violates our Terms of Service; specifically, Term 8.10, which prohibits the legal defense of financial and violent crimes, including those related to money laundering, murder, robbery, assault, battery, sex crimes or crimes against minors.” Money that was raised was promptly refunded to donors.

McCloud shared that “A medical emergency led to a tragic situation that has changed everything for me. I am doing my best to stay strong, follow the steps ahead, and trust God for guidance, healing, and provision.” Any funds raised would also help provide for transportation needs, medical care, and daily living expenses.

Jennifer Cooper’s family has also filed a civil lawsuit against Auburn City Schools alleging the school district should be held accountable for the deadly crash and that McCloud was prone to diabetic episodes and was prescribed opiates for her medical condition. Gigi’s Cupcakes announced the closing of their Columbus location six months after the crash that killed the 42-year-old mother of two. The Opelika bakery remains open for business.
