National Weather Service confirms July 28 tornadoes in Towns/Habersham Counties

After collaboration between the NWS offices in Peachtree City and Greenville, along with local residents, a pair of tornadoes has been confirmed from the July 28th mesoscale convective system (MCS) that moved through North Georgia.

Both tornadoes were EF-0 with estimated winds of 75 m.p.h. and both occurred primarily in remote, steep terrain of eastern Towns County and extreme northern Habersham County.

The first tornado touched down near Hwy 76 near Adkins Lane. It is believed to have been on the ground for around 1.69 miles and was at most 100 yards wide. No injuries occurred, and damage was limited to mainly snapped and uprooted trees. An additional, weak touchdown could have occurred in the inaccessible terrain over extreme western Rabun County, but nothing has been (or will be) confirmed due to location.

The same rotation touched down again north of Batesville, again as an EF-0 storm with winds of 75 m.p.h. A width of at most 30 yards was confirmed as the tornado was on the ground for approximately 2.75 miles. Again, the damage was primarily uprooted and snapped trees along Goshen Mountain Road south towards the intersection of Highways 356 and 197.
