
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is on the scene where a Columbus police officer and a police K9 were injured during a shootout with a suspect. The chaotic scene erupted in South Columbus just after 10 am Tuesday June 23, 2026.
Police were initially called to the Dollar General on Victory Drive after a deadly shooting inside the store. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the victim as 44-year-old Alexis Hill. Hill, a cashier for the store was shot in the head and died at the scene.
As Columbus police officers patrolling the area were searching for a person of interest about a mile near the scene of the Dollar General shooting, they encountered the suspect on Baker Plaza Drive. The suspect opened fire on responding police and the K9. Police shot and killed the suspect. The officer and the dog sustained non-life threatening injuries during the incident.
It is standard protocol for the GBI to investigate an officer involved shooting. Columbus police have not identified the injured officer.
