ALTO, Ga. — The Alto Town Council will meet in a special called session Thursday evening to consider a final amendment to the town’s 2025 budget and discuss Alto’s participation in the proposed Banks County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 25 at Alto Town Hall.
One of the key items on the agenda is the proposed Banks County SPLOST. Alto is one of only a handful of northeast Georgia municipalities that spans two counties, with portions of the town located in both Habersham and Banks counties. As a result, the town is eligible to receive SPLOST proceeds generated in each county.
Banks County officials are currently developing a project list for the next SPLOST referendum, which is expected to go before voters later this year. The tax, if approved, would fund capital improvement projects throughout the county and its municipalities. Banks County’s current SPLOST program has funded projects including road improvements, public safety equipment, recreation facilities and other infrastructure investments.
The discussion comes just weeks after the Baldwin City Council reviewed a preliminary proposal that would direct a significant share of its anticipated Banks County SPLOST revenue toward water infrastructure improvements, including transmission line upgrades and additional water storage capacity. Alto officials have not publicly identified any projects they may seek to include in the Banks County SPLOST package.
Council members will also consider a final amendment to the town’s 2025 budget. No details regarding the proposed budget changes were included in the meeting agenda.
The council will also provide an opportunity for public comment before adjournment.
The meeting is open to the public.
