CLAYTON, Ga. — A Rabun Gap woman was arrested earlier this week after deputies allegedly discovered about a pound of suspected methamphetamine during a traffic stop on U.S. 441, according to Rabun County Sheriff Mark Gerrells.

Gerrells said deputies with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office conducted the stop May 4 and observed indicators of possible criminal activity during the encounter.

A K9 unit conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics, the sheriff said. A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered approximately one pound of suspected methamphetamine concealed beneath the spare tire.

Billie Jo Jamison, 53, of Rabun Gap, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Rabun County Detention Center.

Jamison is charged with trafficking methamphetamine under O.C.G.A. 16-13-31 and manufacturing, distributing, dispensing or possessing with intent to distribute a controlled substance near a park or housing project under O.C.G.A. 16-13-32.5.

“I am proud of the work our deputies continue to do to identify and remove illegal narcotics from our community,” Gerrells said in a statement. “Cases like this highlight the importance of proactive law enforcement and strong interagency cooperation in combating drug trafficking.”

The investigation remains ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
