Man dies after East Columbus shooting

One man is dead after a shooting in East Columbus late Thursday afternoon. Columbus Police were called to the scene on Merrywood Drive at 5:20 pm May 7, 2026, after reports of gunfire.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the homicide victim as Dean Hill. The 30-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Piedmont Hospital shortly after the violence erupted. Hill will be transported to the GBI crime lab in Decatur, GA for an autopsy according to the coroner.

Police spokeswoman Brittany Santiago said one person is in custody. 27-year-old Korbet Smith has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting investigation. Smith is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court May 14, 2026.
