Muscogee County Democrats are flocking to the polls for early voting far outpacing local Republicans according to the latest data provided by the Secretary of State’s office.

The unofficial turnout through Thursday May 7, 2026, shows 9,473 voters have already cast their ballots in Columbus. Local voters have selected 7,156 democratic ballots compared to 1,972 republican ballots and 345 nonpartisan ballots.

Local races for mayor, city council and school board are considered nonpartisan but party affiliates like Muscogee County Young Dems have flooded social media with candidate endorsements.

The Muscogee County Republican party addressed the dismal turnout on Facebook saying in part “If you want dems to run Columbus and the state don’t vote. If not get up off your butts and go vote!!! And vote RED!!!!!” Some commentators expressed dismay that their fellow republicans were unaware of the local races being decided in the May primary as opposed to the general election in November.

Early voting continues at three locations in Columbus including the City Services Center, Shirley B Winston rec center and the Northside rec center. Voters can cast their ballot early through May 15, 2026. Election day is May 19, 2026.
