CORNELIA, Ga. — A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of Cornelia after a contractor struck a water main Saturday, causing a service interruption and low water pressure in the area.
According to the City of Cornelia Utilities, the interruption occurred May 1 when a 6-inch water main was hit, requiring water service to be shut off for repairs.
The advisory affects sections of Maple Street from Summit Street to Highland Avenue, Huff Avenue, Esta Street, Scott Avenue, Dogwood Avenue, and a section of Laurel Drive from Spring Street to Maple Street. Officials said 32 residential customers are impacted.
City officials warned that the loss of pressure in parts of the system could allow contaminants to enter the water supply through backflow or back-siphonage.
As a precaution, residents in the affected areas are advised to boil all water for drinking, cooking, or preparing baby food. Water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil.
The advisory will remain in place until the water system is fully restored and testing confirms the water is safe for consumption, according to Utilities Director Keith Ethridge.
