BANKS COUNTY, Ga. — A pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended with a successful PIT maneuver on Interstate 85 in Banks County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Troopers from Post 52 in Hartwell were notified Sept. 9 that a stolen white Volkswagen Tiguan had entered Georgia from South Carolina on I-85.
Troopers and Franklin County sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle traveling south near mile marker 165 in Franklin County. Authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over, prompting troopers to pursue them south into Banks County.
Troopers performed a PIT maneuver, causing the Volkswagen to leave the west shoulder of the interstate. The vehicle came to rest in a ditch facing east.
No injuries were reported.
The driver, identified as Devonte Williams of Greenville, South Carolina, was transported to the Franklin County Detention Center. He was charged with multiple counts of fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, theft by receiving stolen property, and possession and use of drug-related objects, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said. Along with these charges, Williams was issued citations for driving under the influence, driving while license withdrawn, and multiple other traffic violations.
