Severe storms expected to move across Georgia early Monday are prompting school delays and closures in multiple districts.
Union County Schools announced all schools will operate on a two-hour delay Monday, March 16, due to a line of severe thunderstorms forecast to move through the area between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., during normal bus and car rider times.
School leaders said the delay will allow the storms to pass and provide daylight for safer travel conditions for buses, student drivers, and families.
“All schools will open two hours later than their normal start time, and bus routes will run two hours later than their usual schedule,” the district said in a statement.
Several other north Georgia school systems also announced schedule changes for Monday:
- Catoosa County Schools — two-hour delay
- Chickamauga City Schools — two-hour delay
- Dade County Schools — two-hour delay
- Dalton Public Schools — remote learning day
- Walker County Schools — two-hour delay
- Whitfield County Schools — two-hour delay
The weather is also impacting school systems in West-Central Georgia, where schools are being closed and delayed due to the severe weather threat.
Forecasters say a strong cold front moving through the state overnight into Monday could bring damaging winds and the possibility of a few tornadoes, with the greatest threat between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Behind the storms, much colder air will move in. A Freeze Warning is in effect Monday night into Tuesday morning for much of the region.
Officials urge families to check with their local school systems for the latest updates, as additional delays or closures remain possible.
