Second victim dies after Athens triple shooting

ATHENS, Ga. — A second victim has died following a triple shooting early Saturday in Athens, authorities confirmed.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Dylan Bentley, a 19-year-old from Jefferson, died Sunday, March 15, after succumbing to injuries he sustained in the shooting. A third victim remains in critical condition.

Police previously arrested 22-year-old Mark Desousa of Jefferson in connection with the incident. He has been charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery in the death of Clayton Adams, a 22-year-old from Hull.

Shots in a parking lot

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, March 14, in the parking lot of a bar in the 400 block of North Jackson Street.

Investigators say three people were shot during the incident.

Adams was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. Bentley was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The third victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Police have not released details about what led to the shooting.

Investigation continues

Multiple agencies are assisting in the investigation, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Athens district attorney’s office, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Safe Streets, the FBI Atlanta Field Division, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
