Pedestrian killed in Athens

A 63-year-old Athens man was killed early Tuesday when he was struck by a vehicle, according to Athens police.

The accident claimed the life of Joseph Buckles.

On Jan. 7 at approximately 7:14 a.m., officers responded to a single-vehicle accident involving a pedestrian in the area of West Broad Street and Old Epps Bridge Road.

Police arrived to find EMS performing life-saving measures on Buckles, but he died at the scene.

The driver, a 21-year-old from Lawrenceville, was not injured, says ACCPD Public Information Officer Lt. Katie Jenkins..

This is the first fatality crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2025.
