Outside agency investigates video leak of Lee County inmate being tased

Outside agency investigates video leak from inside the Lee County Detention Center showing inmate tased while jail workers laugh (Delaina Guess/Facebook)

An outside agency is investigating how a video was obtained from inside the Lee County Detention Center and later shared with the public. Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed to NowGeorgia.com that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation and said the request is not “out of the ordinary.” Sheriff Jones noted his office has routinely requested the assistance of the Russell County Sheriff’s Office during previous unrelated investigations inside the jail.

The video in question was posted online Sunday May 3, 2026, and shows a Lee County inmate being tased while jail workers laugh. The date and time stamp on the video indicates the incident took place February 17, 2026. The unidentified inmate is seen approaching the window of another cell and does not appear to be a physical threat from the camera angle recording the incident when the inmate is tased.

Delaina Guess uploaded the video on Facebook with the caption “So this is how Lee county Alabama is run? Laughing and walking off when someone is tazed? And tazed from behind the desk! What kind of craziness is this?” Guess recently shared a photo of a business card left by an investigator from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office posting “Is this what Lee county is paying for? Shelby county detectives coming to my house because jay jones wants an outside investigation? I think Lee and Shelby county have more violent criminals to deal with than me and my fb post!”

Guess is a travel corrections nurse according to her online profile and supports Cam Hunt who recently unseated Jay Jones as sheriff of Lee County. It is unclear if Guess has ever worked inside the Lee County Detention Center. The damning video was shared just days before Sheriff Jones lost the republican primary in Lee County. The conditions inside the facility had been a campaign talking point for Cam Hunt.

“A professionally run jail is safe, secure, sanitary, and predictable. That starts with hiring the right people, training them properly, and supervising them consistently. When any of that breaks down, you get exactly what we’re seeing. Excessive use of force, misconduct, and a loss of control inside the facility,” Hunt said in part at the time the video was made public.
Sheriff Jones said that workers involved in the incident received “internal disciplinary action not for public disclosure.” When asked what specific crime was committed by releasing the video Sheriff Jones did not specify a particular criminal offense but stated “the release of internal, investigative materials” was against the law. He said the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the incident “in the interest of objectivity”.
