DEMOREST, Ga. — A 66-year-old Demorest woman has died from injuries she sustained in a wreck on Highway 441 Tuesday afternoon. Deborah McKendree was pronounced dead at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, according to Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire.
McKendree was fatally injured in a collision with a utility truck operated by the Northeast Georgia Housing Authority. Authorities have not released the truck driver’s identity or details about how the crash occurred.
Habersham County Emergency Services described the wreck as an apparent head-on collision. Emergency crews were dispatched to the wreck on Highway 441 in front of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church around 12:43 p.m. Aug. 25.
Photos from the scene show McKendree’s 50cc gasoline-powered moped underneath the front of the utility truck. An ambulance transported her to the trauma center at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. McKendree’s daughter, Nichole Singer, said her mother was dead on arrival at the hospital.
In a statement to Now Georgia Singer paid tribute to McKendree whom she described as a “mother of one grandmother of five. She was the light in so many lives; when you were down she made you laugh and forget about all your problems. She was just the coolest person.”
McEntire expressed condolences to McKendree’s family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” he said.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
