Superhero pancake breakfast to benefit Meals on Wheels

CORNELIA, Ga. — A local Meals on Wheels program will host a superhero-themed pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday at the Cornelia LongHorn Steakhouse, aiming to support meal deliveries for homebound seniors in Habersham County.

The “Superhero Pancake Breakfast” will take place April 11 from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Organizers encourage attendees to come dressed as their favorite heroes while enjoying breakfast and family-friendly activities.

Christina Odom of the Habersham County Senior Center said planning for this year’s event began in December, though the fundraiser has been held in previous years.

She said the superhero theme is designed to recognize both community heroes and the volunteers who help deliver meals each day.

“We’re wanting to honor the superheroes in our community,” Odom said, pointing to the planned “touch-a-truck” portion of the event featuring emergency service vehicles. “The costumes are just a touch of whimsy for the children to enjoy.”

Odom added that Meals on Wheels volunteers are also among those being celebrated.

“We have some excellent volunteers that help serve members of our community, and they’re some of our superheroes, too,” she said.

The event will include a “touch-a-truck” experience with local emergency services, allowing families to meet first responders and see their equipment up close. Volunteers — many from the senior center — will also be on hand, some dressed as superheroes.

Breakfast plates will cost $8 and include two pancakes, two pieces of sausage and a drink. Organizers will also offer children’s activities, including a coloring table, and sell goody bags for $5.

“We’ll have goodie bags available for sale for kids, a coloring table as well, and it’s just an overall positive atmosphere and a lot of fun,” Odom said.

Organizers have set a goal of selling 200 tickets, which Odom said would generate about $1,600 for the program — a mark they have not reached in previous years.

“That would be very beneficial for our community members,” she said.

Odom said the program expects to deliver about 49,000 meals this year, underscoring the importance of community support.

“That’s nutrition going out to the community — meals they wouldn’t be able to get on their own because the people on the Meals on Wheels program are generally unable to leave their homes,” she said. “By bringing these nutritious meals to them, it’s a huge, huge deal.”

The program currently serves about 149 to 150 residents on average and relies heavily on volunteers to deliver meals each day.

“We’re needing people to come in every day to help pick up these routes and deliver meals,” Odom said. “If someone has the time and they’re able to volunteer to help deliver, that would mean the world to our community members.”

Walk-ins are welcome for Saturday’s event. For more information, contact the Habersham County Senior Center.
