GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a 72-year-old woman who was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Hall County Jail.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, a Flowery Branch police officer transported the woman to the jail after arresting her on a DUI charge Saturday, Aug. 29. Jail records show she entered the jail at 12:23 a.m. and was, at some point in the process, placed in a holding cell while awaiting booking.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, jail officers found the woman unresponsive shortly after 1 a.m. and began lifesaving efforts. Jail nurses also responded before Hall County emergency personnel transported her to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
The woman was pronounced dead shortly before 2:15 a.m.
A preliminary investigation determined the woman used the cord from the telephone in the holding cell to choke herself, said sheriff’s office spokesperson B.J. Williams.
The sheriff’s office contacted the GBI on the day the woman died, Williams said. The GBI is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The woman’s identity was not released.
