Herbert Ivan “Van” Rainwater Jr.

Herbert Ivan “Van” Rainwater Jr., 83, of Demorest, Georgia, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on September 7, 2026.

Born on May 7, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, Van lived a life characterized by faith, determination, service, and unwavering love for his family. His perseverance, ability to overcome physical limitations, positive spirit, and steadfast trust in God served as an inspiration to all who knew him.

Van’s greatest passion was leading others to Jesus Christ. As a young adult, he was an active member of Rainbow Park Baptist Church in Decatur, GA, and later Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Decatur & Conyers, GA, where he served as a deacon, youth leader, and Sunday School teacher. For the past eighteen years, he has been a devoted member and deacon at Clarkesville Baptist Church. His life was a testimony to his faith, and he never missed an opportunity to encourage others in their walk with Christ.

Van shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Guthrie Rainwater. Together, they built a Christ-centered home and a family that brought him tremendous joy and pride. He is survived by his wife, Susan Guthrie Rainwater of Demorest; his son, Blake Rainwater and wife, Angie, of Clarkesville; his daughter, Alyson Rainwater Paul and husband, Matt, of Demorest; and his treasured grandchildren, Mackenzie Rainwater Bardenwerper and husband, Brett, of Clarkesville; Sawyer Paul of Dahlonega; and Brighton Paul of Dahlonega. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Rainwater Parker, and her husband, Danny, of Austell, GA.

Van will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, faithful deacon, teacher, mentor, and friend. He possessed a quiet strength, a servant’s heart, and a genuine concern for others. His life demonstrated that true ability is not measured by physical limitations but by faith, character, and a willingness to serve.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Clarkesville Baptist Church in Clarkesville, Georgia. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service. Flowers are welcome or, in honor of Van Rainwater, the family would appreciate memorial gifts made to Clarkesville Baptist Church.
