GDOT awards $6.79M contract for SR 2 improvements in Rabun County

(GDOT)

RABUN COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $6.79 million contract for roadway improvements along State Route 2 in Rabun County, according to District 1 Communications Manager Nathan Johnston.

The project will cover about 15.8 miles of SR 2, beginning at the Towns County line and extending east of State Route 15. Work will include milling, inlay, plant mix resurfacing and shoulder rehabilitation.

The contract was awarded to Pittman Construction Company in the amount of $6,793,351.80, Johnston said. The project is scheduled for completion by Dec. 31, 2026, weather permitting.

According to Johnston, the improvements are designed to enhance pavement conditions, strengthen roadway durability and improve overall safety for motorists traveling through the mountainous corridor. Shoulder rehabilitation will also provide additional support for vehicles and improve recovery space along the route.

Motorists should expect periodic lane closures during construction. GDOT urges drivers to use caution in work zones, reduce speed and remain alert for crews and equipment.

The agency said the project is part of its ongoing investment in infrastructure to support safe and efficient travel across Northeast Georgia.
