CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — The Clarkesville City Council will discuss park design and receive an update on several grant opportunities and projects during its Sept. 1 work session.
The council will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
Grants Administrator Sara Burke will provide an update on the city’s current grant activity, including efforts to identify funding for park and recreation improvements.
Clarkesville is evaluating potential projects for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Stewardship Grant, which could support parks, recreation, conservation and public access improvements. The city is working with the Soque River Watershed Association on the application and reporting process.
City officials also are gathering quotes and information from Georgia schools, churches and other organizations that have recently completed park projects as the city considers a secondary grant opportunity for park improvements.
The grant update comes as the council prepares to discuss park design during the same work session.
Burke also is expected to update council on several infrastructure and public safety grants.
The city is continuing development of its GEFA Water Infrastructure and Planning Program application and working to incorporate feedback from Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank reviewers into future transportation and infrastructure grant applications.
The city also is nearing completion of its water and sewer infrastructure grant. Burke’s update states that the closeout report was submitted July 10, with the grant awaiting the results of the city’s fiscal 2025 audit before it can be fully closed.
For the Police Department Safety Grant, all required progress reports have been completed, approved equipment for the training grant has been ordered and reimbursement documentation has been submitted. The project remains on schedule and in compliance with grant requirements, although license plate readers have not yet been ordered.
The city also plans to continue monitoring reimbursement and closeout requirements for the police grant, establish its DNR account, renew its SAM.gov account and receive training on entering requests for qualifications and requests for proposals through the city’s website.
The council previously discussed pursuing a Federal Transit Administration Transit-Oriented Development planning grant, with city officials identifying pedestrian safety, sidewalks and bike lanes as potential priorities for the application. The city also has previously explored grants for wastewater infrastructure.
