Athens police investigating death of 22-year-old Winterville man

ATHENS, Ga. — Athens-Clarke County police are investigating the death of a 22-year-old man found unresponsive Thursday night downtown.

Around 8:16 p.m. on November 6, officers responded to a “person down” call in the 100 block of Madison Avenue. When they arrived, they found a man on the sidewalk, later identified as 22-year-old Antonio Jewell of Winterville.

Emergency Medical Services and the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department attempted life-saving measures, but Jewell died at the scene from his injuries. Police did not specify what type of injuries he had sustained.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Jewell’s death, according to Athens-Clarke County Police Department Public Information Assistant Geoff Gilliland.
