BANKS COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of an inmate at the Banks County Detention Center.
The Banks County Sheriff’s Office said the inmate died Tuesday, Aug. 18, while in custody at the jail. Authorities have not released the inmate’s name or details surrounding the death.
The Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation. Officials said they delayed publicly announcing the death while working to identify and notify the inmate’s next of kin.
“We believe it is important to provide family members with this information directly and respectfully before releasing details publicly,” the sheriff’s office said.
No additional information about the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death was available Wednesday.
