HARTWELL, Ga. — The Hart County Water and Sewer Authority is asking customers to continue conserving water as crews work to fully restore the system following a major water main break that prompted a countywide boil water advisory.
Although the damaged 12-inch transmission main has been repaired, officials said restoring normal service is a gradual process because of the significant loss of water and system pressure caused by the break.
According to an update from the authority, crews must slowly repressurize the water system, remove trapped air from transmission and distribution lines and refill water storage tanks before service can return to normal for all customers.
The authority said most customers have regained water service, but a small number remain affected as crews continue balancing the system and restoring storage levels.
Workers have been on the job around the clock with assistance from contractors and mutual aid partners to restore service safely and as quickly as possible.
While the boil water advisory remains in effect, officials are asking customers to limit water use to essential needs. Residents should postpone outdoor watering, vehicle washing and other non-essential activities. Water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and food preparation should continue to be boiled until the advisory is lifted.
Officials said conserving water will help the system recover more quickly and ensure adequate supplies remain available for essential needs and emergency services.
Customers who continue to experience no water or very low water pressure after service has been restored in their area are encouraged to contact the Hart County Water and Sewer Authority so crews can investigate their specific location.
The authority thanked customers for their patience and cooperation as restoration efforts continue.
