ALTO, Ga. — The Alto Town Council is expected to wrap up Habersham County’s municipal approvals for a proposed countywide sales tax agreement when it meets Tuesday evening July 14.
Council members will consider a resolution supporting the intergovernmental agreement for the proposed Floating Homestead Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST), one of three items under new business during the July 14 meeting.
Clarkesville and Mount Airy approved the agreement at their meetings Monday night as expected, making Alto the seventh and final municipality in Habersham County to sign on to the proposal before it heads to the county for final action and ultimately to voters in November.
The proposed one-cent sales tax would provide property tax relief by offsetting the cost of county homestead exemptions. If approved by voters Nov. 3, the tax would take effect Jan. 1, 2027, and remain in place through Dec. 31, 2031. Municipalities receive a share of the proceeds based on a state-established distribution formula.
Council members also will consider an amendment to Habersham County’s intergovernmental agreement for animal control services.
Another agenda item could formalize how council members participate remotely in meetings. The council is scheduled to consider a resolution establishing a policy for virtual participation in municipal council meetings.
The issue comes less than three weeks after the council’s June 25 special called meeting, when Councilman Allen Fox participated virtually through Zoom rather than attending in person.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Alto Town Hall, with a work session scheduled for 6 p.m. Council members also are expected to approve minutes from the June 25 special called meeting before taking up new business.
