GAINESVILLE, Ga. — U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff announced more than $1 million in federal funding to help Habitat for Humanity of Hall County build new affordable housing in Gainesville.
The funding, totaling $1,005,000, was secured through bipartisan federal government funding legislation that became law on Feb. 3, according to Ossoff’s office.
Habitat for Humanity of Hall County plans to use the money to develop a new housing community in Gainesville. The funding will help pay for surveying work and water infrastructure for the development, as well as the construction of the first three homes.
“Georgia families urgently need more affordable housing. That’s why I brought Republicans and Democrats together to help build new housing units for families in Hall County,” Ossoff said in a statement.
Habitat for Humanity of Hall County Executive Director Lila Weaver called the appropriation a significant investment in addressing housing needs in the area.
“This appropriation is a transformative investment in affordable housing for Hall County,” Weaver said. “It will allow Habitat for Humanity of Hall County to accelerate the development of safe, stable homes for families who need them most.”
Weaver said the organization sees firsthand how homeownership can affect families and communities and that the funding will allow Habitat to expand its reach.
She also thanked Ossoff and his staff for their assistance during the federal appropriations process.
“This support allows us to bring that life-changing opportunity to even more of our neighbors, and we are profoundly grateful for this funding which will significantly expand our impact and assist us in building a stronger, more resilient community,” Weaver said.
The project comes as communities across Georgia continue to face challenges related to housing affordability and limited housing inventory. Habitat for Humanity of Hall County works with qualifying families to provide opportunities for affordable homeownership through volunteer labor, community partnerships and low-cost mortgage programs.
