Human remains discovered at West Point Lake in 1990 have now been identified and the Troup County Sheriff’s Office is closer to solving the 26-year-old cold case.
On March 11, 1990, a body that was in the advanced state of decomposition was discovered on the shore of West Point Lake. At the time of the discovery, it appeared the death was that of a homicide. Also recovered with the body were several personal belongings and faded tattoos. The body would remain unidentified despite the best efforts to do so at the time.
In 2025 the case was assigned to Investigator Clay Bryant. The remains were being held at the GBI Crime Lab who sent DNA samples to a private laboratory for DNA extraction. A DNA profile was created and forwarded to the FBI who was able to make a positive identity.
The body was identified as Craig Alexander Maddox who at the time lived in Arkansas. With information gained through family members, the case is under further investigation as a homicide.
