CLEVELAND, Ga. – Investigators with the White County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate a reported sexual assault incident that led to the arrest of 29-year-old Salvador Velazquez of Mt. Airy on multiple felony charges.
According to a news release from Sheriff Rick Kelley, deputies and investigators responded on May 7 to a residence in White County in reference to a reported sexual assault involving a 24-year-old female victim.
During the investigation, authorities identified Velazquez as the suspect. Investigators said the suspect and victim were well-known acquaintances. Law enforcement officers, assisted by the Helen Police Department, attempted to apprehend Velazquez, but he fled the scene on foot and was not immediately located.
Authorities said Velazquez later turned himself in at the White County Jail without further incident.
Velazquez has been charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, and battery under the Family Violence Act. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
